Lets Celebrate the October is Right Brainers Rule MonthAre you tired of people asking you to be “more down to earth”? Do you cringe every time you realize you’ve left a paintbrush in your utensil drawer, or you left the house with a pencil behind your ear again? If you’re tired of having to leave your “zone” because of phone interruptions or mindless conversations with people who don’t “get it,” you are not alone, Right-Brain Thinker.
You are not alone—and you should be proud!
The world would be a dull place without right-brain thinkers. Without sculpture or poetry, paintings or movies, where would we be? Still picking gnats out of one another’s fur, likely. Right brain thinkers are pioneers, innovators—the people who come up with new ways to make the world a better place each and every day.
So during the month of October, stand up and be proud of who you are—a creative, imaginative and (possibly wacky) awesome person. Take a stand against the status quo; every time someone tells you, “That’s not how it’s done!” retort back, “It’s how I do it!” When your mother asks you why you can’t be more like your CPA brother Phil, gaily reply, “Because Phil is boring!” Well, don’t be mean to Phil—there’s just as much value in a left-brain thinker as a right-brain one, after all—but you get the idea.
To celebrate your right-mindedness—or to get in on it if you’re a leftie who wants to join in—try one of the following.
- Go on an Artist Date. Or, as Julia Cameron suggests, go on one every week! Hit the movies, an art supply store, a travel agency—wherever your artist feels like going.
- Get on the floor and make something. Anything—a mandala, a painting, an etch-a-sketch doodle, whatever. If you must stay at your desk, fine—but you have to wear a funny hat.
- Dress up. Don your most outrageous outfit. Play dress-up with your kids if you have them. Dance to funky disco tunes. Have tea in goofy cups, speak with an accent, or even get a book of monologues from the library and act them out.
- Post surprise art everywhere. Put bright postcards on the insides of your kitchen cabinets—send the most wildly garish ones to friends. Add a bit of guerilla sidewalk chalk art in your community. Create something beautiful and send it to someone anonymously.
